AI and Radiology: Who’s in the pilot seat?

Written by Innovation Care Partners | Sep 26, 2025 5:50:00 PM

When SMIL radiologist Lea Alhilali, MD, presented during the virtual ICP All Member meeting in May, it was clear that our members wanted to hear more. She recently provided some additional insight on AI in radiology. The human radiologist isn’t going anywhere.

Dr. Alhilali emphasizes that while AI has proven to be a valuable addition to radiology, it’s not a replacement for human expertise. She highlighted specific solutions, such as RapidAI which exceeds human capabilities in measuring the volume of stroke which helps neurologists make treatment decisions. Additionally, Aidoc has been implemented to automatically review scans, prioritize potential abnormalities, and seamlessly integrates with PACs – expediting the diagnostic process.

Plans for future implementation
SMIL, HonorHealth, and Radiology Partners have collaborated in the formation of an AI task force. This team meets regularly to discuss AI tools and their possible impact or implementation, ensuring that only proven technologies with physician involvement are adopted. Despite the overwhelming hype surrounding AI, Dr. Alhilali stressed the importance of cautious and data-driven implementation.

The Bottom Line
AI is a powerful tool to help radiologists, not replace them. It assists in workflow and prioritization, much like autopilot in aviation, the human element remains crucial.

And remember, while AI has many valuable uses, please advise your patients not to ask ChatGPT to read their radiology images.
